Hermès Shawl 140 cm – The Three Graces – Alice Shirley (2020)
Pièce unique.
Designed by Alice Shirley and issued by Hermès for spring-summer 2020, The Three Graces has never been reissued and quickly became a collector’s piece. The design was born on a journey to South Africa, where the artist glimpsed a giraffe, then two, then three, hidden behind an acacia. It takes up one of the oldest subjects in art, the Three Graces, and entrusts it to three giraffes emerging from foliage of blue flowers and palm fronds, beneath the branches of a tree, on a bright red ground.
Presented here in its exceptionally rare 140 cm cashmere and silk shawl version, the design reveals its full scale. A luminous, spectacular collector’s piece, a true Hermès grail.

A word from Diane
The Three Graces are one of the oldest subjects in painting: three intertwined figures, from Raphael to Canova. Alice Shirley keeps the title and changes everything else. No more goddesses, but three giraffes stepping out of the foliage, each in its own movement. Grace, here, lies in a bending neck and a glance. In cashmere and silk 140, this superb design, much loved by collectors, comes into its own. A marvel!
From the Hermès booklet (our translation):
“It was on a journey to South Africa that Alice Shirley was lucky enough to glimpse a giraffe, then two, then three, hidden behind the acacia on which they were feasting.
Giraffes are the tallest animals on earth, and their delicacy is infinite. Their movements are broad and elegant. They see far and wide, and sleep little, often standing up.
They prune the trees as they feed, and scatter seeds as they move.
Their life is in perfect harmony with their surroundings.
Hermès, mindful of the beauty and balance of nature, here pays tribute to these graceful, poetic giants.”
