Art and History of this Hermès Scarf

Can we think of Hermès in America without mentioning Kermit Oliver? The first American artist to collaborate with the house, this former Texas postman, passionate about history, theology and symbolism, stands out for his erudite, deeply narrative style.

With The Americas , Oliver avoids folkloric imagery but pays homage to the great pre-Columbian civilizations – Mayans, Aztecs, Incas, Taínos. To the east of the composition, Christopher Columbus stands in all his majesty, beneath Henricus Martellus's world map (1489), accompanied by his caravels and the coat of arms that Isabella the Catholic would later bestow upon him.

To the west, a richly adorned native king welcomes the conqueror under the watchful gaze of the protective jaguar and ancient deities. At his feet lie the riches of the New World: codices, calendars, fruits, gold, and obsidian. The square also subtly evokes the myth of the god Quetzalcoatl, whose return was foretold… from the west.

A scholarly, profoundly spiritual square that finely weaves together the thread between history, beliefs, and civilizations.
