Norman headdresses - HERMES SCARF 90CM

Sale price$1,146.00 CAD

"Norman Headdresses," designed by Zoé Pauwels in 1989 and reissued only once in 1991 , this scarf pays homage to the iconic "Norman Costumes" designed in 1950 by Hugo Grygkar, subtly reinterpreted by Zoé Pauwels. The soft and sophisticated color palette combines a pastel pink, an off-white and gray background, with subtle multicolored touches. This scarf is in good condition , with a few pulled threads and small stains visible in the photos. A rare and highly sought-after piece among Hermès scarf collectors. Due to its central cartouche which reads "Costumes of the departments of Seine-Inférieure, Calvados, Manche, and Orne," this scarf is often confused with the one created by Hugo Grygkar. This confusion arises from the fact that these two scarves are inspired by engravings from the book "Costumes of the Women of the Pays de Caux" by Louis-Marie Lanté and Georges-Jacques Gatine, published in 1827. This book certainly held a place of honor in the library of Emile Hermès, who was born in Pont-Audemer. With this scarf, Zoé Pauwels pays homage to the magnificent headdresses of these elegant Norman women. Made in the lace workshops established by Colbert in 1665, these masterpieces of Alençon lace could be worth up to 1,500 francs at the time for wedding headdresses and were passed down from mother to daughter.
